Assignment 1

8 sketches

4 roughs

2 prototypes

My prototypes look very different from my roughs. I had to change everything because people didn't get what my roughs were trying to communicate. I think I was trying to put too many ideas into the picture, at least for fantasy, but lacked the technical abilities to carry it forth. So I opted for a more direct, impactful representation.

I love reading fantasy books. I chose to use a dragon to signify fantasy because I think the connection is instant. Dragon = fantasy. The dragon is also breathing flames, which form my name, onto the book to link me, the book, and fantasy together. I wanted to really emphasize my name, so I used the contrasting colour of fire to grab attention.

I hate insomnia as it's something I've had since I was young. I placed the clock upon suggestions from classmates, to signify the lateness of the hour. I also tried to create a gloomy atmosphere by using duller colours. Again I tried to contrast the colour of my name with the rest of the colours. I realise, after presenting, that the moon should not be yellow if I want to use dull colours for everything but the name.

Love: You can improve rendering of the book by outlining the pages of the book? I was wondering if the dragon was holding the book? And your name, the dragon picked it out of the page to eat it? Your name looks like floating on the pages. You can definately fine tune the image.
Hate: It took a while to differentiate the letter 'D' and the backrest of the cot/bed. You can improve that by either changing the height of the backrest or the letter. A little 3d effect for the letters will immensely improve the overall perspective of the design. Can you open the guy's eyes? On close inspection they seem to be open but the lines below the eyes, are they representations of dark circles? or just that the eyebrows are at the wrong place?
Good effort and representation techniques.

Love: Ok, I will try to outline the pages. The book is floating in mid-air, and the dragon is in a protective embrace of it. It is the dragon that is breathing flames in the shape of my name. Although it seems strange that a book can float in mid-air and doesn't get burnt even though the dragon is breathing flames on it, but I did this to emphasize the fact that this is in a fantasy world and not everything is as we would expect.

Hate: The guy's eyes are open wide, because he can't sleep. The lines below the eyes are supposed to be dark rings, but I can't draw them very well. Will try to improve on it!

Thanks for all the suggestions. Looks like I have a lot of work to do to improve this..
