Initial sketch
Levels of abstraction
Final symbol
This is the mask worn by Kurosaki Ichigo in the anime, bleach. I sketched the first image and
did the rest in photoshop. I abstracted it by removing first the designs, then the cracks, and changed the expression. For the generic symbol, that is not an angry expression. The big hole for the mouth allows you to express many mouth expressions such as a smile, sadness, surprise and etcetera, which is why I felt that this would be the beginning of genericness, because it signifies a mask that can take on any expression.

Figure 1, 2, 3 has a cutout in the left eye which disappears from figure 4, was that intentional? If so then what is the reason behind it?
Yes it was intentional. As I abstracted towards a more generic mask I had to remove the cracks so that it would lose its specificity. I wanted each stage to have a signature change and not too drastic. To this end I removed the mask's designs in the 3rd figure, the cracks in the 4th and changed to a generic mouth in the 5th, which is my generic symbol. Would you suggest I skip figure 4 altogether?
